Muddy Paws: dog cages

Dog cages are a must-have for all dog owners and are becoming increasingly popular in the UK as they have a lot of major benefits for both the owner and their dog.
Cages are crucial for keeping your dog safe (as well as your furniture) when they are unsupervised. By keeping your dog inside a spacious cage with food, water and toys while you are out, it prevents your home from being chewed, or soiled.
However, you cannot expect to simply buy a crate and put your dog into it. You need to allow your dog time to get used to a new cage, as a place of his own within the house where he will feel safe and secure. A dog's reaction to something is based on emotion and instinct, so allow him time to wander into and out of the crate on his own, giving him a treat in the cage, as well as a toy to play with. He will then be reassured that it is safe.
Make sure you purchase a dog crate that allows for good movement of your dog. A dog will want to be able to stand up and turn around and the crate should be of a size where your dog can do this with comfort. If you buy a crate for a puppy, make sure you allow for him to grow, some breeds obviously grow bigger than others but check with your dog crate supplier or you could end up buying another crate for him/her.
Most cages can be assembled easily and disabled quickly for easy storage, ideal if you are going away and taking your dog with you. You should buy a cage which will stand the test of time and in most cases you get what you pay for, so by investing in a good quality cage, you are saving money in the long run.

Is there any problem laying new sod over muddy soil?
We had the sod delivered & then got a big rain. We already had topsoil spread, so everything is pretty muddy. As long as we can keep the soil pretty smooth, is there any reason not to lay the sod? It may be several days before we could lay it otherwise & we're afraid the sod will die.
I've gotten a few answers, some yes, some no. What I'd like to know from those who say not to do so is, why not? What problems does this cause, if any?
It is a balance between leaving the ground uneven from putting it down and the sod dying on the pallet. The mud will not harm it by any means and the sooner the better getting it laid. You can get away with about 48 hours max before the sod will start to be effected greatly by being stacked for too long. If you have a small amount and could lay it out on your drive or a patio this will extend its ability to await suitable conditions to be laid by weeks possibly ...so long as it does not dry out! If you do decide to put it down and it gets a lot of foot prints in it I would be ready in the next few days to roll it. Rolling it will help in 2 ways: 1 get good contact to the soil 2: even out the ground. If you do this as soon as you can walk on it and before the roots have a lot of time to take hold you should be able to get any unevenness out that may happen. Also doing it several times say after it has been watered over the course of a few weeks will help if needed. Hope this helps and good luck!!
