Development of cities and towns in Britain during 1780-1880
Industrial revolution of 18th and 19th century occurred in the United Kingdom before spreading to the rest parts of Europe. During industrial revolution major changes occurred in agriculture, mining, transport, technology and manufacturing of finished goods. On this basis, these changes had some effects on the socio-economic and cultural conditions of the United Kingdom. It is of importance to note that, the industrial revolution marked a major change in human history where almost every aspect of human life was affected in one way or the other. The industrial revolution in Britain started when inventions began to establish factories for the manufacturing of finished goods bringing to an end the era of domestic system of production (Dennis 1984).
Basically, the advances in agricultural practices led to an improvement of food supply and supply of raw materials. As technological practices increased in organizations, there was improvement of production, efficiency and profits. It should be noted that, Britain pioneered industrialization processed in Europe which made it to lead over the other nations in the whole of Europe. As indicated by Meller (1997), the industrial revolution in Britain brought about major changes in lifestyles, cultures, and urban development. In this case, there were various changes in the development of urban towns and cities during the industrial revolution. It is of importance to note that, industrial revolution brought about improved technologies that changed the way urban houses were being built. On the other hand, when the people's lifestyles changed their mode of living in these cities also underwent a drastic change during the industrial revolution. On this basis, there were strategies that integrated land use and transportation planning that improved the built, economic and social environments of communities. Importantly, the industrial revolution led to urban planning and urban renewal (Meller (1997).
Additionally, the industrial brought about introduction of industries which resulted to many people migrating to the urban areas. In this case, there was an expansion in population in urban areas which called for expansion of cities. On the other hand, since the technology has improved the design used in constructing urban houses was different from what was there before. Further, the lifestyles and social statuses of people in these cities and towns improved since there was more means of income. This led to people willing to stay in a sophisticated manner and hence the types of structures built were of a higher quality than what was there before (Evans 2001.
It is of importance to note that, industrial revolution led to urbanization and hence there were drastic changes in the developments of the Britain's cities and town. As indicated by Meller (1997), not all urban industries and urban areas in Britain during the industrial revolution developed at the same time and rate. In this case, there were some towns which experienced industrialization more than others. Basically, where there industries improved technologies and increased employments which called for development of cities and towns were experienced (Dennis 1984).
A point worth noting is that, the industrial revolution of Britain brought about new technology that led to environmental problems. The factories were located at the cities and the workers could not commute from rural areas to the urban areas to work. As a result of this, there were increased rural-urban migrations which made the urban cities and towns to expand in length and congestion (Chapman 1971).
Population explosion in Britain cities
Certainly, during the industrial revolution that spread out the whole of Britain; the use of steam technology in running machines led to increased number of factories especially textile factories. Basically, the growth of the factories in this country made people to move from the rural areas to the cities and towns in seek of better paid jobs. This was brought about by the low wages and introduction of new machines in the agricultural sector. Additionally, there were a lot of infections in the farms that made people to run away from the agricultural sectors. Further, there was increased need for workers in the factories in urban areas and the factory owners build houses for their workers. This led to increased population in urban areas and increased buildings in these urban cities and towns. As a result of this migration, cities were filled with people with London being the worst of all. It is of importance to note that, at the beginning of 19th century about 1/5 of the England's population lived in urban areas like London while in 1851 almost half of the country's population had migrated in urban areas and set up homes there. This led to the development of cities and towns during the industrial revolution (Chadwick 2009).
The extensive migration of people from the rural areas to the urban areas got the cities not prepared for this in terms of capacity and hence people crowded in an already crowded houses and cities. This made the city developers to build more houses and lodgings to accommodate the increasing population in urban areas. In these cities people find it easy to walk from their houses to the work places in urban areas. By this time there was no running water or toilets in the cities and hence people had to share. As a result of this revolution, a lot of buildings were built like houses, toilets, and lodgings among others in order to help this increasing population. On this basis, story buildings were build which indicated that towns and cities like London were developing at a very high rate (Burnett 1990).
